The main thing I’ve carried from childhood throughout adulthood has been music.
I’ve been a musician all my life - from starting to learn piano at age 5 and flute at age 11 - it was my music ability that played a huge part in me securing my first job as a primary school teacher.
Never back then did I expect to be doing what I am now. I’m no longer a school teacher but those leading skills have been utilised in being a Music Director for community choirs. And I never expected to be self-employed and running a business that’s so different from being in the classroom.
Being a stay-at-home mum enabled me to look at options. I came across Utility Warehouse in 2018 when reviewing our household outgoings and realising we were overpaying by £1000 a year. Since saving so much by switching, I decided to share UW with others and start earning as a Partner. After all, it makes sense to promote something I believe in and use myself. I really dislike seeing people being ripped off unnecessarily, and I believe I have a duty to show others how they can achieve long term value with less hassle, award winning customer service and all round fairness of billing.
Meanwhile, I was developing my choir confident singers performing in community functions and big fundraisers, with growing popularity and membership at 120. Thursday evenings are the highlight of my week, and I’ve been told by some members it’s the highlight of theirs, too!
One of the best ways for small businesses to gain new contacts is through networking, and I’ve been to many networking groups over the years. I genuinely treasure meeting people this way, as I love people! I love getting to know them, learning their beliefs, values and the reason they do what they do, and to hear their stories of how they got there: they are so fascinating! I also love connecting people. If I can introduce two people where it makes a difference to their lives, I am very happy.
So, bringing my things together – being a small business owner and a professional musician – seemed to make sense. I founded a singing group for ladies in business that includes an opportunity to grow their network through song, which is so uplifting and empowering!
